Better Together is a community project now in its seventh year, bringing together young people and older members of the Windrush Generation to share stories, experiences, and conversations.
Through open discussions and creative activities, the project explores themes of migration, identity, heritage, and belonging. It creates a space where generations can learn from one another, connect through shared experiences, and build stronger community ties.
By understanding the past, young people are encouraged to feel proud of who they are and confident in shaping the future.

What is Windrush Day?
Windrush Day, marked every year on 22 June, honours the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948 and celebrates the immense contribution of Caribbean people to Britain. The passengers aboard the Windrush were among the first of thousands invited to help rebuild the UK after the Second World War. They became nurses, engineers, transport workers, artists, soldiers, faith leaders and community builders — shaping modern British culture in profound and lasting ways. Windrush Day ensures their legacy is recognised, their stories preserved and their role in British history taught with dignity and truth.
The day is also a reminder of the injustices many elders later faced during the Windrush Scandal, including wrongful detentions, loss of employment, threats of deportation and the emotional trauma caused by the Hostile Environment. Commemorating Windrush Day is therefore both a celebration and a call for justice, respect and continued support for those affected.
Kainé Management plays an active role in Windrush Day because our mission is rooted in heritage, community empowerment and intergenerational connection. We recognise that the Windrush Generation laid the foundations for many of the communities we serve today. Their resilience, culture and leadership continue to inspire our work across Leicester and beyond.
