In 2007 Kainé Management Group were awarded £16,000 from the Heritage Lottery fund as part of a partnership bid with Leicester African Caribbean Arts Forum, Leicester City Council Arts & Museum Service and Library Service commemorating the abolition of slave trade. The award has enabled Kainé Management Group to co-ordinate a year long project called Sing Freedom.

The Sing Freedom project was based on Negro Spirituals, sang by African Peoples as a result of being enslaved. These songs not only overtly sang of a better land and way of living but contained instructions about escape routes and safe houses and eventual freedom The project included research into the songs, a touring exhibition, song writing workshops and two performances.
